If you are familiar with Alice in Wonderland, you probably remember the infamous cry of the Queen of Hearts: “Off with their heads!” This is just a play on words, but I think it's worth noting the Queen of Hearts made this statement, not the “Queen of Minds.”

In your walk with the Lord, there's sometimes a disconnect between your head and your heart. For example, the Bible tells us we're “more than conquerors” (see Romans 8:37), but you may sometimes feel a disconnect between that promise and your current reality.

That battle between the heart and the head is the real battle for every believer. The majority of the growing pains you deal with as a believer are because of internal conflict between the old man and the new man in Christ.

Many Bible verses have layered meanings. Here is one such verse: “Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands” (see Revelation 20:4).

Revelation 20:4 talks about the souls of those who had been “beheaded” by the Word of God and the testimony of Jesus. Some think this verse is exclusively talking about martyrdom. There will be martyrs in the last days, but we are also talking about a spiritual truth.

Why did those in this verse lose their heads? We read in the Bible that “the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy” (see Revelation 19:10). They had been “beheaded” by the Word of God and the prophetic, the testimony of Jesus. The natural mind “does not receive the things of the Spirit of God” (see I Corinthians 2:14), so they did not need it.

Ultimately, our goal as Christians is to have the mind of Christ. However, our human minds can be full of evil, hurt, unforgiveness, bitterness, anger, frustration, and doubt. These things take up space not in our hearts but in our minds.

The natural mind is a bigger enemy to your spiritual advancement and maturity than even the devil. The devil has already been defeated. I'm not saying he's powerless, but he only has the amount of power the Lord gives him. For example, he couldn't touch Job without permission (see Job 1:8-12).

If you rebuke the devil because of thoughts of doubt, fear, or unbelief, and the thoughts do not stop, then it may not be the devil. The natural mind may be to blame. I Corinthians 2:14 says, “But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”

However, we can choose to be “beheaded” by the Word of God. We can “take every thought captive” (see II Corinthians 10:4-6) under the obedience of Christ.

Head knowledge does not save us. We might try to reason with people in today’s woke culture, but we can’t convince them with intellect alone. What we need is the Spirit of God to break off the influence from the spirit realm that causes them to think the way they do. It's going to take a spiritual reformation.

Perhaps Jesus Christ is showing us how to go beyond our constant battle by “losing our heads.” What if we “lose our heads” and start living from the Spirit?

Jesus said in John 6:63, “The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.” That's the difference between your words falling to the ground and being forgotten and your words getting into people's spirits and changing them. We believers are trying to give the Word a body and a voice in our generation, but we can't have His mind until we lose ours. Off with your head!

In Matthew 10:39, Jesus says, “He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.” Will you lose your head to gain your life?
