In my recent message “Leggo My Ego,” I shared how the same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead lives in us. However, He can remain shelled inside our spirits, almost like how a turtle goes inside its shell to hide from the wind, rain, and sun. That’s what our egos do with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit wants to flow out of us like a river, but our egos keep Christ hidden inside us like turtles hiding inside their shells. When this happens, the Spirit cannot flow through our hands to heal people or through our words to prophesy to people.

Think of your ego like a three-legged kitchen stool. The three legs of ego are inferiority, insecurity, and superiority. Our egos can cause inferiority complexes. When we see someone who has more than us, we may assume there is something wrong with us, which leads to insecurity. When our egos get wounded, we may feel insecure, or we may try to find something wrong with others to massage our egos. Then, if we don’t respond with intense scrutiny, we may try to project superiority, which can lead to territorialism or a religious spirit.

Your ego is the image you have of yourself that maintains your sense of identity. This is usually gained by comparisons and how we relate to others. True or not, we often accept our identities based largely on what others or what we ourselves have told us about ourselves. You must decide whether you will accept this as truth or let yourself be “crucified with Christ.”

In Mark 10:37-38, two disciples fought over what their positions would be when Jesus comes in His glory. “They said to Him, ‘Grant us that we may sit, one on Your right hand and the other on Your left, in Your glory.’ But Jesus said to them, ‘You do not know what you ask. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?’”

Jesus basically said, “You have no idea what you are asking, because I came to die.” His glory was the cross, and they did not realize they were asking if they could be like the two thieves who were crucified at His right and left hand. Paul later explained this in Galatians 2:20: “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” Without realizing it, they were asking to live the Galatians 2:20 life.

Our egos are like turtle shells. They are what cuts us off from the outside world and gives us a sense of separation. Our egos can not only cause us to separate ourselves from others, but also from living supernatural lives. Your ego is the turtle shell that separates you from God, from divine encounters, and from increases of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

The Scriptures say that God is jealous over our thought lives, how we spend our time, even who we allow in our lives. James 4:5-7 says, “Do you think that the Scripture says in vain, ‘The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously’? But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: ‘God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.’ Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.”

There is a grace being released right now for every person who wants to live the Galatians 2:20 life. I pray that the Lord will help you become “crucified with Christ” and not let your ego keep the part of you alive that needs to die.
