I mentioned last week how the children of God are begotten through the seed of God, which is His Word. The Bible uses “seed” to refer to conception, but also to describe the Word of God being sown like plant seeds.

The Bible compares the seed of the Word of God with the seed by which we were begotten by our earthly fathers. It also compares earthly flesh to plants to show that our flesh is temporary. I Peter 1:24 says, “All flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of the grass. The grass withers, and its flower falls away.” Peter is saying we are allotted a certain number of years, then we die. However, those who are begotten by the living seed of the Word of God will never die. They have eternal life, because that seed is eternal.

The seed of the Word of God is what every listener must receive for salvation to begin. That is why we are saved by the foolishness of preaching (see I Corinthians 1:21). The seed of the Word of God is what we receive in our hearts by faith. It takes faith to be saved. “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17).

The old, sinful self is dead and crucified with Christ. The new man is nurtured through Bible reading, prayer, worship, and intercession. The Christ seed within each of us begins to grow, while the old self decreases. Galatians 2:20 says, I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” As a believer there are two versions of you fighting for supremacy—the old you and the new you. In the new covenant, you can learn to rely on the new you—Christ who lives within you.

A seed has to find the right soil to take root. We see this in Jesus’ parables. Luke 8:11-15 says, “Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. Those by the wayside are the ones who hear; then the devil comes and takes away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. But the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. Now the ones that fell among thorns are those who, when they have heard, go out and are choked with cares, riches, and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to maturity. But the ones that fell on the good ground are those who, having heard the word with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with patience.”

Then In Matthew, the disciples asked Jesus to explain the parable of the wheat and tares. “He answered and said to them: ‘He who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world, the good seeds are the sons of the kingdom, but the tares are the sons of the wicked one’” (Matthew 13:37-38).

How is it, in Luke 8, the seed is the Word of God, yet in Matthew 13, the seeds are the sons of the kingdom? The difference is, in Matthew 13, the children of God at the end of the age are distinguished from the children of the devil, the tares. So, the seed, the Word of God, took root and kept growing until it produced children of God. The Word is always looking for fertile ground for the seed to become flesh and become manifested in the last days.
