I want to share about Jesus turning water into wine. I believe this represents a new outpouring of the Holy Spirit, of which we have, so far, only received the earnest or down payment.

The Bible tells of Jesus turning water into wine at a wedding in Cana. John 2:6-10 says, “Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, according to the manner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallons apiece. Jesus said to them, ‘Fill the waterpots with water.’ And they filled them up to the brim. And He said to them, ‘Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast.’ And they took it. When the master of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom. And he said to him, ‘Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!’”

When Jesus turned the water to wine, He portrayed prophetically the transformation of man from one thing to another, from the old man to the new one. Man has always come short of the glory of God (see Romans 3:23). There is a transformation, a renewing, and a miracle required in all of us—just as the water was transformed.

Paul said in I Corinthians 15:51-52, “Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed—in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.” Paul speaks of this as a change from the natural body to the spiritual body (see I Corinthians 15:44). What hope we have as believers!

Jesus miraculously made new wine from undrinkable water used to wash feet, as was required for purification according to Jewish laws. It had also been turned into not just any wine, but the best wine. This is a prophetic picture of how He is saving the best for last. He has saved the best wine for another marriage—the marriage supper of the Lamb.

The original wine was served at Pentecost in Acts 2. Verse 4 says they “were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Some wondered why these people were drunk so early in the day. Peter replied in Acts 2:15,  “For these are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day.” He didn't say they weren't drunk; he said they were not drunk as you suppose. They were drunk in the Spirit.

Peter then quotes the prophet Joel, who said, “And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, that I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh” (see Acts 2:17). God first dispensed the wine of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, but the last serving of wine will be the best. That will be reserved for the Feast of Tabernacles. It may be in ten, twenty, or thirty years, but one of these years at the Feast of Tabernacles, there will be a release of the God’s glory that will fill the earth, just as it was released in Solomon’s Temple during the Feast of Tabernacles (see II Chronicles 5:13-14). Only this time, it won’t just be in one city or a few. No, the glory of God will pour out and drench the whole world, so others can drink the new wine.

The purpose of Pentecost was to empower the disciples to preach the gospel to the whole world with signs and wonders. The purpose of the last-day outpouring will be the same, but in greater measure. The greatest outpouring of the Holy Spirit has not happened yet. Because of what happened in Acts 2, we can heal the sick, raise the dead, cast out demons, and transform nations by the power of the Holy Spirit. However, a greater outpouring is yet to come.

Are you ready for the new wine of the Holy Spirit? It won’t make you mean or violent like an alcoholic; it will turn you from a son of Adam into a son of God. Some of you need to get a fresh drink of the Holy Spirit. It’s time for you to get the new wine and drink it in deeply. Jeremiah 29:13 says, “And you will seek Me and find Me, when you seek Me with all your heart.” So, come, Holy Spirit. Bring the new wine and a new release of Your grace.
