Abraham was apparently a member of the aristocracy of perhaps the most interesting nation and culture in the world at the time. He left it, and his family, to seek the city that God is building. As great as the things that man has accomplished are, none of them can compare to what God is building. Once we see what God is doing, it is hard to be too impressed with anything man has done.

We’re not called to just leave something but to go to something far greater. The law of entropy declares that everything in this realm will deteriorate, but we’re told in Ecclesiastes 3:14, “Everything God does will remain forever.” We’re not called to an insignificant or temporary place. However, it’s not about the place itself; it’s about the One who lives there, the One who is the true desire of every human heart.

Are we willing to leave all that we have invested in this world to be a part of what captured Abraham’s heart and the heart of each person who perceives it? This is the one thing we were created for, and to pursue it is the greatest quest there will ever be. This city is not being built out of just stones but “living stones,” the people who are becoming like Christ, the Rock. He is the only stable ground in the times we’re entering.

We’re promised that if we put His kingdom first—His interests above our own—He will put our interests first. That’s the best deal that anyone has ever been given! Everything we need will be given to us. Just as Abraham received far more as a sojourner than he had left behind in Ur, we will find far more on our journey than we could have ever left.

Even so, it’s not about what we get but about what we become a part of—God’s own family,   His temple, His “holy nation,” and what He’s building to rule the nations.

We’re called to preach the gospel of the kingdom and to prepare the way for Him to return and set up His kingdom on the earth. God loved this world so much that He sent His Son to redeem it and restore it. He loves this creation so much that He would send the One who is priceless to pay the full price for us. Now, it’s our turn to pay the full price for Him.

We’re told in Revelation that God the Father will come to earth and make His dwelling place on earth among men. When God comes to abide on the earth with His family, this little world will be the capital of the universe! That’s not just the physical universe but the spiritual as well. Those who have become sons and daughters of the King of kings will judge angels and all others who are in that realm.

We’re told that the entire physical universe is but “a shadow” of the spiritual. This means that, compared to the spiritual, the physical is like a shadow being compared to what is casting the shadow. The earth will then be the bridge between the physical and spiritual, and there the government of all will make its home. Earth will be the most exciting place in all of creation, and because of all that God has already invested in it, most of all His own Son, it already is exciting.

We’re called to help prepare this earth to be God’s home! And He does not just call us His subjects but His family. The Lord’s family has been praying for His kingdom to come to this earth since He physically walked here. Could there be a higher purpose than to help make the way for Him?

Could there be a more exciting job in the universe? If we are bored with our faith, then we have somehow gotten seriously off the path. If this has happened, there is nothing in our life more important to do than to get back on it. “Boring” is a sign that we have departed from the way.

One important sign that we’re on the right path is that we will know constant awe and wonder at our King and what He is doing. There is no one in all of creation as exciting and wonderful as the Creator, and He wants us to call Him Father! I love animals and am constantly amazed and entertained by them, but how much greater is it to know our Father in heaven who created all?

Every encounter with Him can only deepen and broaden our faith and vision. Every observance of His works will deepen our awe and wonder of Him, and He wants to do these works through us!

Those who serve Him in this time are called to be a part of the greatest cause there has ever been or will be. We must not let something as shallow as our comfort or our security rob us of this ultimate purpose and opportunity. Even the highest angelic majesties have not been called to be His sons and daughters.

This was the choice Abraham, the father of faith, made, and we’re also called to make this choice to be part of the greatest of all adventures that can be lived. It is a calling that we must respond to, and we will have to leave some things that we love and value to do it. The apostle called those things he left but “rubbish” in comparison. The greatest treasures on earth are considered only waste compared to “the call.” Do you hear the call? Do you see His city?
