More than any technology, philosophy, or religion, fear is the devil’s most powerful weapon against light and truth. The Lord leads by truth that sets people free to follow it. So, if we are led by fear, we are following the devil and not being led by the Lord. Following the Lord requires us to walk in faith, not fear.
Do I believe that artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to destroy human civilization? Yes, as do quite a few other things. The same questions were asked about computers. The real issue with AI is its potential to take control of itself and then possibly everything else. Now, the main question is this: Who do we want to ensure that AI is not going to take control of itself and threaten the human race? Who is smart enough to devise and oversee the safeguards to prevent this?
Who are our choices? One of the main developers of a popular AI platform suggested that the one(s) chosen to oversee AI should be devoted to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). For me, that disqualified that person from even being in this discussion. I would hope that anyone involved in this would not be prone to using political or social criteria for this issue. That would certainly disqualify a lot of people and groups, but only a very tiny percentage of people should even be in the running for this position. We need to disqualify all others.
So, who is in the running to control the development of AI in the future? Let’s start with one that many people likely think of: the United States government. The government is so divided and dysfunctional now. Who in our government could do this—or even has the technical knowledge to do it—and has the broad trust required? Statements made by some of our elected officials indicate that if their side wins the midterms, we can expect China to be given the lead.
One possibility for government control would be the military. Nuclear weapons can destroy civilization much faster than AI, and the military, overseen by the government, has done well controlling nuclear weapons for the 75-plus years the weapons have existed, though we did have some close calls.
It is not my purpose to process this decision here any further but to highlight what a hard decision it is that our leaders are going to be facing. They need our prayers to receive wisdom from above, because it seems no one on earth has that wisdom right now.
Biblical prophecy from Jesus Himself assures us that the end of this age will be the greatest time of trouble the world has ever seen. Are we there yet? If not, we must be close. Can the discord get any worse without someone pushing the button that blows everything up? It can. What happens to us is not dependent on men or the tribulations or conditions on earth.
Our God, in Whom we put our trust, is our Shepherd and Keeper, and there will never be anyone or anything—including AI—that is wiser or more powerful than Him. He has told us in biblical prophecy how this age will end. It will get very close to mankind destroying the whole earth, but He assures us that He will intervene before that happens. He has to let it get close to show us for all time that we cannot run this world without Him and that we should never try it again.
Besides the things man creates that now threaten us all, there are many forces in the universe that can destroy the earth and all life on it. The frequency with which these exist in the universe—and remain intent on taking shots at us regularly—should make us wonder how we made it through another day.
It is not by our wisdom or abilities that we dodge the gamma-ray bursts from supernovas, one of which could destroy life on earth down to the cellular level in seconds. Neither is it by any of our abilities that we have dodged the many planet-killing asteroids that are constantly passing through our solar system. Neither has it been our wisdom that has kept a supervolcano from erupting that would give the oceans the pH level of battery acid in just a few weeks. According to some geologists, several volcanoes that are big enough to do this are overdue for eruption by between 100,000 and 200,000 years. This means every day is borrowed time, just from these.
There are so many other things that threaten our existence that it seems the whole universe is trying very hard to kill us every day. The only reason that the earth and all who are on it make it through another day is that we are being kept! The One Who is keeping us is bigger than all of these threats. If we see Him for Who He is and where He sits above all authority, power, and dominion, no threat will shake us.
Relax. He’s got this!
